Modern Languages

The study of modern language is an integral element of NWU’s strong liberal arts program. All students take at least one language course and must demonstrate a proficiency at the second-semester level or higher.

To determine the appropriate level for students who previously have studied language, we have a placement process. All students who have studied French, German, or Spanish need to complete the Language Assessment. Students who have studied Chinese or Japanese will talk with the Department Chair to determine level placement. Please complete the Language Assessment as soon as you receive the information from Admissions.

Proficiency may also be demonstrated by advanced study of language in high school. Students who complete four years of modern language in high school with a grade of “B” or better in every term or students who earn an “A” or better in all terms of the fourth year have met the proficiency requirement and a waiver for the requirement will be noted by the Registrar on the academic analysis. Because this waiver is not determined until receipt of the final transcripts, all students who have studied French, German or Spanish must take the Language Assessment as part of pre-registration. Students who have successfully completed four years of language study and receive the waiver are especially encouraged to continue studying modern language at Nebraska Wesleyan.

Twenty-three years later, Jean-Francois Champollion cracked the hieroglyphic code and the discipline of Egyptology was born. This course will explore Egypt’s language, literature, religion, history, and culture during the 3000 years when pharaohs, like Cleopatra, the power couple Akhenaten and Nefertiti, their son Tutankhamun, and Ramesses II, reigned supreme. We will also examine how Egyptology shapes our understanding of the ancient past and how colonialism continues to impact Egypt to the present day.

This course explores the motivations to imitate, as well as various types of copying in art, music, literature, and popular culture. We will analyze everything from so-called “designer dupes” in fashion to famous fine art forgeries, from sampling in Hip-Hop music to the use of AI writing bots, and from copyright lawsuits to debates about cultural appropriation. In this course, students will research and relive the history of this New York institution, as well as its roots in Chicago, Toronto, vaudeville, and even ancient Rome. Some issues to be covered and discussed include human gene therapy, healthcare reform, abortion, animal experimentation, human research, human cloning, and reproductive technology. The Civil Rights movement was a struggle for racial equality and economic justice. This class engages two of its most prominent figures, Malcolm X and The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., to better understand who these men were and what motivated them. We will read the works of Malcolm X and King to construct a class curriculum for a high school history class. The goal is to create something that gives high school students tools to discuss the intersection of race and masculinity at this pivotal moment in American history. We do this because the United States still reckons with the work these men did for us, and the way they united the country then can be a path to uniting the country now.

Based on Margaret Atwood’s 1985 best-selling novel the award-winning Hulu series chronicles the oppression and courage of women reduced to property in a totalitarian state. Make no mistake: this place called “Gilead” is a dystopia, a fictional space of war and violence where the many lead wretched lives. Yet the popularity of the series and renewed interest in Atwood’s novels suggest that we learn valuable lessons when we compare our social and political lives to Gilead. So, we read the novels, watch the series, study what some scholars say, and discuss and wonder about possibilities for a real and better place, perhaps even a utopia? Our study culminates in creative projects that contribute to ongoing work for social justice.

Cemeteries tell many stories. They tell of the people who are buried there. They tell of art and architecture. They tell the history of parks and landscape architecture. Cemeteries were some of the first American parks – intentional green spaces - open to the public and not restricted by the specific religious groups of the graveyards. They were places to spend time to reflect on both death and life. This class will trace the changes in American cemeteries from colonial times to today. Inscriptions, epitaphs, carved decorative designs and symbols provide evidence of attitudes toward death and dying. Burial practices from several cultures will be discussed to provide contrast to American customs. We’ll also do some digging into ancestry.
