Modern Languages

The study of modern language is an integral element of NWU’s strong liberal arts program. All students take at least one language course and must demonstrate a proficiency at the second-semester level or higher.

To determine the appropriate level for students who previously have studied language, we have a placement process. All students who have studied French, German, or Spanish need to complete the Language Assessment. Students who have studied Chinese or Japanese will talk with the Department Chair to determine level placement. Please complete the Language Assessment as soon as you receive the information from Admissions.

Proficiency may also be demonstrated by advanced study of language in high school. Students who complete four years of modern language in high school with a grade of “B” or better in every term or students who earn an “A” or better in all terms of the fourth year have met the proficiency requirement and a waiver for the requirement will be noted by the Registrar on the academic analysis. Because this waiver is not determined until receipt of the final transcripts, all students who have studied French, German or Spanish must take the Language Assessment as part of pre-registration. Students who have successfully completed four years of language study and receive the waiver are especially encouraged to continue studying modern language at Nebraska Wesleyan.

Cemeteries were some of the first American parks – intentional green spaces - open to the public and not restricted by the specific religious groups of the graveyards. They were places to spend time to reflect on both death and life. This class will trace the changes in American cemeteries from colonial times to today. Inscriptions, epitaphs, carved decorative designs and symbols provide evidence of attitudes toward death and dying. Burial practices from several cultures will be discussed to provide contrast to American customs. We’ll also do some digging into ancestry.

We examine stereotypes and theories of generational differences, and study and stage our own campaigns and elections to find out for ourselves: what is myth and what is real about generations. Our class investigates whether people’s political views can be shaped by the eras in which they come of age. We compare generational cohorts and ask whether different generations have different attitudes toward democracy, inequality, climate change, technology, etc. We critically assess the data and evidence that support or refute a variety of theories of generations. Based upon what we learn, we run our own campaigns and elections in class to determine for ourselves whether generational differences impact American politics.
